Observing my home town in a new way .

Blog 3 : Visual Thinking

As the second part of our Visual Thinking project we needed to go out and take photos of our home town and interpret them in a way . So that my home town would some how be of a new environment to me, last Friday being a national holiday here in Malta I went out with my younger brother and told him that I would follow him everywhere he wanted to go and I have to say I ended up in new roads seeing new houses , old monuments , churches and small natural sites which are still unharmed .

Reference cars and today’s society

As shown in references one,two and three you may only interpret them with the everyday life, but if you look very closely one may interpret the images in a very different way . Reference one shows to cars one painted in black and the other in white and this to me represents in two human races in the world were unfortunately many individuals are going back to the mistakes done in the past were many of us thought we were inferior to other races especially to those with darker skin . Comparing the space between the two parked cars this could represent lack of social integrity we are showing between one culture and the other . The two cars but could represent a totally new perspective to the image, were although the two cars are different from the outside the shape and colour both of them work the same from the inside and require the same tools to work smoothly .The same way we are us humans although we are different from the inside everyone individual on this planet need the simplest of objects to live for example food, water and peace and with all of these being at risk we have to work together so that we could make the world a better place not only for us but most importantly for the future generations.

Reference 2 locked door not open to new ideas

In the second image shown in reference 2 we could see an abandoned home which no one has never ever visited for a long time and the locked door seems that the old owner was not willing for change. On the side of the building but you could see a small note were there’s a notice, noting that the building is going to build from scratch from a new owner. This could be clarified in many different ways but I see it in way that the abandoned building represents the old generation or the closed minded people who for one reason or another don’t accept other individuals with cultural differences. Unfortunately especially here in Malta there are many of them, and in other countries especially Europe and America this has become very popular in recent months were we have demonstrations and fights happening and more racial abuse taking place on social media and even during sports events. The permission on the side of the building noticing the public that a new building is going to be built from scratch could mean that the new generation and those which accept everyone, what ever their cultural background are trying to bring new ideas into the country, homes and in social groups. Although not everyone accepts cultural differences in other people we are noticing that many young social groups are containing individuals from every corner of the world.

Reference 3 Car Garage

In this image shown in reference 3 we could see a car garage and is making everyday’s individuals life easier by helping them with their car issues. This image but could be interpreted in a totally different way, although we as individuals find our homes as safe we often see them as a place were all our problems go away and reality stops but in realty that is was is separating each individual. Every home is connected through wires as like the car is connected to the tire, we as individuals are connected all together even if we like or not. The tires and wires could be seen as a sign of globalization and if a few of us decide to do poor decisions all of us will suffer in one way or the other. With worldwide problems at their peek like migration, global warming we as humans have to stand together against this and if not we and the other living creatures will parish with us.

Reference 1 Elizabeth image

Elizabeth Gray a structural engineer like to take photographs of urban and architectural sites and has a huge passion for street photography . She loves to take pictures of the environment around here and then go home and visuals it in a totally different way to that when she took the picture the first time ( Elizabeth Gray 2018 ).

The image shown in reference one ,Elizabeth tries to create a convincing shot to let individuals imagine and develop their own stories and ideas . Elizabeth argues that the best photo should include rule of thirds , use of negative space and symmetry but the most important of all is that the viewer and asks questions about what is in the image ( Elizabeth Gray 2018).

When she sees the perfect scenario she detects how the light hits them and how both them will effect the background . One she knows perfectly what she really wants she pre-focuses on were she wants her main object or subject to be and waits for the perfect photo. In her images she tries to capture the emotions, gestures but mostly importantly the moment so that she could tell the story far more better and we examining the image could imagine far more better (Elizabeth Gray 2018).

In this image she is trying to reach to us a message that although that although many people show no kind of facial expression and are highly influenced from social media and companies we need to try and be individuals ( Elizabeth Gray 2018).

Reference 3

Whilst doing this blog I also decided to do a small test with some of my friends, as shown in reference 2 and 3 you could see that both of them agree that the women is trying to mimic the mannequins to feel beautiful and accepted by the society, but they only give a slight perspective of what the true meaning of this photograph is and how today’s society has truly changed . This could also be a sign that in todays education we are not going much in depth on what we could see and what information we could gather from an image.

How a photograph can effect us

Blog 1 : Visual Thinking

Boots In Step
Reference 1 Elizabeth street photography

When people see this photograph shown in reference 1 many would think that its only a fashion promotion, but if you look closely at the image and brainstorm deep in this image you could find many hidden messages representing today’s life .

As a photography and visual thinking student this photo represents to me how many individuals in today’s world are fake and want to be seen how social media and top leading companies around the world portrait how the perfect person is. The plastic manicans represent those people who judge us and are seen by the community as the perfect ones and as shown in the image they don’t only come in one way shape of form but in various ways that we can get influenced a little bit from all of them.

These perfect people portrayed from these social media platforms are shown in various ways, for example being perfectly built , play some kind of sports , be the brightest in the class, earn the best grades in class and attend parties with the most famous and rich people in the country . Unfortunately although they may be seen as perfect by many , like everyone else they also have their own personal problems and in spite the fact that they are always laughing and seem happy, they may be living a very difficult life. Unfortunately due to advertising being very influential in the last few years, in my opinion they are acting as way of propaganda were many young and senior individuals are influenced from. Unfortunately we are losing many open minded people everyday which in today’s society are seen as strange or weird . The image shows to us how the women walks, what kind of clothes she is wearing and her posture and these can been as a metaphor of how she is influenced by the manicans and unfortunately she has fallen in the trap to copy them .

The umbrella but could be seen as hint that there is still hope for change and that there are still people who think with their minds and don’t talk and write how others want them to.Another hint which could be seen as a sign of hope is that the women is walking to the East , the East could be a sign of new hope were the sun rises everyday to provide us with warmth and light and we could unlock our inner potential.

Although the independent and open minded are seen as the black sheep of the community, they live life the way they want to live and not how it is portrayed to them from television or social media or how it is told to them from others . These people are able to make their own decisions , and don’t care how they are seen and judged by others . They listen to everyone’s point of view and are not biased towards one movement this happens very especially in Malta and in my opinion that is regressing our culture to keep up with the modernizing world .
